Building a Personal Knowledge Base That Actually Gets Used

Most personal knowledge bases fail the same way: capture is easy, retrieval is not. You have four hundred notes, and you cannot find the one you need when you need it.

The fix is shockingly simple

  1. Write to re-read, not to archive. Phrase every note as if explaining to yourself six months from now.
  2. One topic per note. Long mixed notes are search poison.
  3. Link as you write. Notes that point to other notes become reachable.

Tools matter far less than habits. Any editor with full-text search beats any “second brain” app you never open.
